Thor-Erik. kickstarting his career in Total

Thor-Erik Sandven is an engineer in the Martin Linge topside team. The 27 year old started working for Total right after university. During three intensive years with the company, Thor-Erik has had a fantastic career start in the oil and gas industry. “I am a prime example of the endless opportunities in Total,” he says.

Chance to see the world

Thor-Erik holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Stavanger. In the summer of 2012 he completed a Master of Science in Risk Management at the university.

“I started working for the Martin Linge project in Stavanger the same summer. After a couple of months I was asked to join the topside engineering team, first in Paris and later in South Korea. It was a great opportunity to gain international work experience and to see the world with my family. Of course I said yes,” he says.

Great responsibility

As a package engineer, Thor-Erik is responsible for 16 equipment deliveries to the Martin Linge platform.  He works closely with vendors all across Europe.

“Good communication skills are important. I make sure that our sub-contractors deliver the equipment on time, to our expectations and in line with company specifications and Norwegian regulations. It is an exciting position which offers much responsibility and great variety,” the engineer says, and continues:

“One of my packages is for example the lifeboats that will be installed on Martin Linge. They represent nearly 50 years of safety development on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. A combination of high capacity, structural integrity, and safe operations will contribute to the platform being a very safe work place.”

Total team commitment

The Martin Linge topside team is spread between three main sites in Norway, Paris and South Korea.

“The project organisation is very international. It can be challenging to communicate across borders. You have to be outgoing and solution oriented. Good teamwork is essential and we all have to bring good energy to work every day,” Thor-Erik says.

In August he moved to Geoje in South Korea. The Martin Linge topside is constructed at the Samsung Heavy Industries yard on the island. He will join the construction team and later the commissioning team and gain even more experience in a new expertises.

“I really appreciate the opportunity Total has given me. This journey is far from over. I have many exciting years ahead of me,” Thor-Erik concludes.
