SunPower Puts Total at the Cutting Edge of Solar Technology
Today, the world is facing a dual challenge: meeting global energy needs and finding ways to solve climate change by emitting less carbon. At Total, we know we can do both, by diversifying the kinds of energy we use. That’s why we are actively involved in solar photovoltaics through our majority interest in SunPower, the world’s second-largest solar energy company1. SunPower’s solar panels are among the most reliable and efficient in the world, with a record conversion rate as high as 24.1%.

Motorised systems called trackers position the photovoltaic panels so that they follow the sun’s course, thus increasing energy efficiency by nearly 25% compared to fixed units.
Prieska (South Africa)
SunPower has applied its exclusive SunPower™ Oasis™ technology to construct its third solar power plant in South Africa. Prieska will supply the equivalent of 78,000 South African households with electricity (86 MW).
SunPower Robotic Cleaning Technology: a robotic solar panel cleaning system to maintain optimum performance
The World’s Second-Largest Solar Energy Company
Total is fully committed to photovoltaics and our affiliate SunPower has made us the second-ranked global player in solar energy. SunPower’s teams — experts in the field — are proficient in every area of photovoltaics, specifically:
- R&D in high-efficiency solar technology.
- Manufacturing solar cells and assembling them into panels (or modules).
- Creating systems for homes and businesses.
- Designing turnkey solar power plants like the Solar Star Projects in California, the world’s biggest photovoltaic development.
High-Quality, High-Performance Products
A company that has been cultivating excellence and boldness for more than 30 years, SunPower has invested in innovation, filing more than 500 patents. Today, its teams are making solar panels that convert 24.1% of solar energy to power, compared with around 17% for standard technology, making them the most efficient in the world. What’s more, SunPower has developed a robotic solar panel cleaning system to maintain optimum performance. This system is quicker and more efficient than traditional methods: it uses 75%2 less water and operates at night to maintain total panel efficiency during the day. Finally, SunPower® has some of the most reliable products on the market: the efficiency of its solar cells remains practically constant over 25 years of operation.
As a result, SunPower® panel users emit 40% less greenhouse gas than standard3 panel users. This energy efficiency and environmental performance have earned SunPower® panels the Total Ecosolutions4 label and a Cradle to Cradle™5 Silver certification for all panels, illustrating SunPower’s high level of environmental excellence, as much in the design as in the production or reuse of its products. SunPower’s Cradle to Cradle Silver panels have also been named Environmental Leader Product of the Year 20166.
A Broader Range of Services to improve the Energy Mix
Today, SunPower is established in 65 countries, where its plants achieve a total photovoltaic production capacity of more than 6 GW. With SunPower, we offer cutting-edge technology and are developing new services based on solar photovoltaics. We help our customers diversify their energy use, providing an efficient response to current challenges.
