Partnership between Total and the Confederation of African Football: a festival of energy
Africa is at the heart of Total's industrial enterprise. Established for over 80 years in 44 countries, with 10,000 employees, the Group is by far the continent's number 1 player in oil and gas production and the distribution of fuels. As well as our business activities, we are always looking to work more closely and purposefully with our African partners. On 21 July 2016, our Group signed an agreement with the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Emblematic of our history and our future in Africa, this sponsorship deal is an opportunity to strengthen our ties with our host countries.
Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of Total and Issa Hayatou, President of the African Football Confederation signing the partnership agreement in Paris on 3 October 2016.
Total teams up with African football
The CAF was founded in 1957 and has 54 member countries. As a title sponsor, Total's name is now associated with the 10 main tournaments organised by this Africa-wide institution. The partnership will launch in January 2017 with the upcoming Total Africa Cup of Nations, a competition with appeal beyond the continent's borders: it is the 3rd most followed football event in the world.
Our partnership with the CAF has a particular resonance for our Group. Central to African life, football brings people together, creating a friendly atmosphere, enthusiasm and, of course, energy. It is natural that our Group, with its emphasis on teamwork and solidarity, should associate itself with this sport. These principles govern our actions, in our projects and in our relationships with our host countries and their populations.
"Seeing the name of our Group associated with a tournament that has become a global event symbolises our commitment to Africa and is a reason for our teams to be proud." - Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of Total.1
